Architects without borders 2011-11-22
#csr
RB Arkitektur is actively supporting Architects without border. Architects without borders (ASF – Sweden) works to create understanding about the built environment and its influence on people and the environment, both locally and globally. Special focus lies with the creation of better conditions for people living in slums or areas hit by natural disasters. At the moment Architects without borders are pursuing projects in Sweden, Palestine and Ethiopia.
Developing safe and sustainable environments is in the line with our own projects, and this question is especially important in developing countries. Architects without borders is bringing this work closer to the ones who need it the most and we are very happy to contribute to that.

How can the inhabitants of Stockholm becomes more engaged in the future of their city?
For the third consecutive year Fastighetsägarna Stockholm and Metro arranged a city planning competition where the inhabitants of Stockholm got to vote for their favorite proposition on how to change Tegelbacken. RB Arkitektur designed one of the propositions, and on December 7 Rahel Belatchew Lerdell will speak about the proposition.
The event not only offers insight into the different architects propositions, but there will also be a debate about how city planning. How can we make the inhabitants of Stockholm more engaged in issues of city development – not only when something is constructed and seen as a problem by the people living close by? How can the region of Stockholm develop together with its inhabitants? How can the citizens be engaged in the city’s vision of future development?

RB Arkitektur in Nya Rum’s Kitchenguide 2011-11-15
#interiordesign #Bromma
One of RB Arkitektur’s renovation projects in Bromma has been published in Nya Rum’s Kitchen guide 2011.
Rahel Belatchew Lerdell has, together with the client, designed a kitchen dominated by the island in the middle of the room.
-We explored different possibilities, such as a parallel kitchen and a bar kitchen. This turned out the most radical alternative where the functions of the kitchen were concentrated to the kitchen island, says Rahel.
The client wanted a calm surrounding where the kitchen devices do not dominate. The clean design hides clever solutions for storage. The wall with the stationary devices are situated was made dark to make the devices as discrete as possible.
The result is a design experience.
-The room has qualities not found in ordinary kitchens. Instead of making a simple kitchen sink a real experience is created by the abstract volumes brought into life by the integrated lighting. It is more like a sculpture than a kitchen, Rahel concludes.

RB Arkitektur member of Sweden GBC 2011-11-02
#sustainability
RB Arkitektur has become a member of the Sweden Green Building Council. Sweden Green Building Council is a non-profit association and an Established Member of the World Green Building Council. The association is owned by it members. The members are companies and organizations within the Swedish construction and real estate sector who aspire to prioritize, develop and affect their environmental and sustainability work.
Through common systems of certification the association wants to create common grounds to enable accelerated development of environmentally friendly construction with a focus on Swedish needs and values. The association also works to increase the competitiveness of Swedish technology and expertise.
The Swedish Green Building Council provides for the development of systems of certification and the marketing of such, as well as courses, seminars and congresses with the goal of spreading, implementing and developing knowledge about sustainable building. SGBC also aspires to be a strong opinion former and thereby contribute to the promotion of sustainable building in Swedish legislation.
We believe this is a natural continuation of our own venture into sustainable building. There is plenty of expertise within the SGBC that we can take part of which can strengthen us in questions concerning environmental certification.

Stadsbryggan Tegelbacken – Urban Archipelago, Stockholm 2011-09-10
We are bringing the archipelago into the heart of the city. The new Tegelbacken in Stockholm offers generous quays and pontoons for a lazy afternoon, a swim or ice skating in winter.
Facing the sun, café terraces, steps, ramps and wooden decks offer a variety of outdoor spaces for people to relax on and benefit from the beautiful view of the city and the neighboring City Hall. At the center of the pontoons lies a pool with clear water thanks to the lush vegetation surrounding it that absorbs the pollution currently found in the water. This way, contaminants are extracted using natural methods at the same time as Tegelbacken gets a vitalizing addition of vegetation.
In our proposal the large elevated road, Centralbron, that currently stretches over the water and cuts through the site is removed and transformed into a tunnel blow the water as part of a trail from Globen to Barnhusbron. The railway tracks are preserved offering travelers a grand entrance into the city. Current dark passages under the roads and railway tracks are kept for the traffic while pedestrians and cyclists benefit from a new path stretching over the rail track. This way pedestrians and cyclists can access the water from the main Vasagatan street without crossing the traffic.
On the new square we suggest the creation of a new public building with activities that can attract people at all hours which will help make the area a safer urban place. The building can house activities such as Media Library, exhibitions and performances. Its different parts are directed towards different points of attraction in the city such as, the City Hall, Riddarholmen and the parliament. On the roof, public terraces offer an unobstructed view over the city.

Publication in “Bygga för senoirer” 2011-03-21

-Not far into the future the number of seniors will heavily increase. Both real estate companies, municipalities and the elderly themselves need to begin to plan the future elderly houseing now. There is no time to waste considering that it takes a long time to develop good homes to grow old in.
That is what Kerstin Kärnekull says, architect and author of the new book "Bygga för seniorer" (Building for elderly) which has just been released by Svensk Byggtjänst (Swedih Construction Service). The content builds on a series of seminars about the future elderly housing proposed by Micasa, the company administers the nursing facilities of the city of Stockholm. Among the examples brought to light in the book there are 6 pages with RB Arkitektur's concept for the future elderly home.
